SCATS Camp

For the past two weeks Western has hosted a camp for gifted middles school students. These students traveled from around Kentucky to participate in a two week camp consisting of various classes that ranged from math to acting. For this past week I have been able to photograph just a few of these classes. First was the Ceramics class, then Jump Into Health, Acting, Natural Disasters, and finally Musical Troupe. The Health and Natural Disasters class were more of your formal classes while the Ceramics, Acting and Musical Troupe consisted of non traditional “hands on” learning. I hope you get a feeling for what this camp was like for these young adults.

Playing in the Rain

To bring the crazy week we had at the office here to a conclusion I was shooting an event when Warren County was placed under a tornado warning. I don’t know how familiar you all are with the Bowling Green area but I was out a Basil Griffin Park off of Three Springs Rd. Down by I-65 shooting the Southern Kentucky Community Band at an outdoor amphitheater. Ya that right. Outside, during a tornado warning. So of course me being the weird photographer I am got really excited because the sky was (how do i put this) overpowering in color, shape, and movement. While everyone began piling in to their cars I just had to take a few frames before the heavens opened up as they say. Thankfully the event was stopped in time for all to get out of the park before the brunt of the storm hit. As far as we know the tornado was spotted East of town and hopefully there was little to no damage to the area if it did touch down. The following images are from the wonderful weather we have here in Bowling Green and a Clarinet Master Class camp that Dr. Cipolla taught all week, and to culminate their week they were able to play with the Community Band on Thursday Night. Enjoy.

Stand for Children Day

OK we are back on chronological track with this post. I tried to get this post up yesterday for you all but that was not the case. So Yesterday, Wednesday, was Stand for Children’s Day here on Campus. I have never seen south lawn more filled with kids then i did yesterday. From what I could tell they were from all over Bowling Green either here with a day care, day camp, or summer camp. These kids were having so much fun i began to envy their zealous play. But that is why I love Photography, I am able to freeze that emotion filled, childlike joy in time and share it with others (that’s you in this case). So I hope that you enjoy these images from the morning festivities. They don’t quite do the event justice but I hope it comes close.

WKU hits the track

What do Big Red, the 05 Chevy racer and Casey Atwood have in common? They all came together Saturday to run the NASCAR Nationwide Series Federated 300 race in Nashville sporting the WKU red towel on the hood. This unique opportunity came about through Brewco Motorsports of Central City as they offered WKU placement on the car in exchange for a feature article in the next WKU Spirit alumni magazine. We were happy to oblige!

Big Red was all over the place followed closely by an ESPN crew. We qualified in 27th place and were moving up the ranks when we were caught in another wreck and forced to exit the race on lap 3. Such is racing they say. Hopefully the experiment worked and a few more people heard about WKU and generated some interest for the Hill. We’ll see!

Gear Up

This post should have come prior to the Rosenbaum post but I just decided to mix things up a bit. Last Thursday and Friday Western hosted approximately 60 high school sophomores from around the Kentucky and Tennessee area. This leadership conference prepares those involved for a more challenging high school experience while preparing them for college. During this conference the 60 + kids stayed in the dorms for one night and on Friday had the chance to go to 4 classes to give them a taste of what college classes are like. The following is a glimpse in to those two days.

Michael Rosenbaum

This past Saturday I had the chance to go document a talk by WKU Alum Michael Rosenbaum for an Alumni conference. The seats of the auditorium was filled with around 50 or so WKU alumni on visit for a weekend back on campus and around Bowling Green. Prior to the talk I was able to meet Mr. Rosenbaum where our conversation centered around trying to guess how many alum in the audience would even know who he was. He was a great guy and I am glad I got to meet him. Enjoy the photos.

ASSET Conference

First off let me introduce myself. My name is Bryan Lemon and I am working with Clinton this summer as the Assistant University Photographer here at Western. So on Monday I got to go shoot my first assignment out at the Western Agriculture Farm here in town. The Ag Dept was hosting a conference for high school aged kids between their Junior and Senior years. Oddly enough these kids are the same age as my brother so that was weird, but I had a great time out there. Everyone was extremely welcoming and I got really great access. The ASSET Conference (Agriculture Students Striving for an Effective Tomorrow) was a great team building conference that lasts for 5 days here at Western and from what I can tell it is a great opportunity for Students and the Councilors hat help out.

Fishing Class

Friday I had the opportunity to photograph the May Term Fly Fishing class on the Gasper River. The class was part of the Recreation Dept. and taught by Dr. Raymond Poff and Harold Maxwell and condensed weeks of information into six days, including casting, rod techniques and tying their own flies. Wow! Everyone had a great time and I look forward to more outdoors classes this summer.
